LEGO® Six Bricks Level 1 & 2 Certificate (Online)

This one-day online learning session has been designed to introduce those attending to the concept of Six Bricks, and learn how to facilitate activities with Six Bricks. As part of the programme, attendees will also have the opportunity to develop their own Six Bricks activities. This is planned as a synchronous online session, to be delivered via Zoom. Six Bricks was developed as a tool for hands-on learning by Care for Education South Africa in partnership with the LEGO Foundation. It is a set of six brightly coloured LEGO® DUPLO® bricks to be used in short, fun activities. When participants are engaged in a playful manner, problem solving and collaboration are practised naturally. The aim of Six Bricks is to bring about playful learning so as to allow for more effective learning.

This programme is intended for anyone who would like to learn to use Six Bricks activities with those they work with. Six Bricks is not a curriculum in and of itself, but are interactive activities designed to support the subject matter. It isn’t what is taught, but how it’s taught. Since playing with LEGO® bricks are fun, the use of Six Bricks can motivate participants to engage in the activities. Six Bricks activities allow for development of executive (e.g. working memory, impulse control, cognitive flexibility) and developmental (e.g. motor skills, social-emotional, creative problem solving) functions.

Level 1 is an introduction to shorter Six Brick activities, while Level 2 builds on Level 1 to introduce more involved activities of increased collaborative nature. Though this is an online session, participants will be sent a physical training kit that contains everything they will require for the session. This includes one box of Six Bricks that contains 12 bricks (so two sets of Six Bricks), template cards, and activity mats.

As the session is highly hands-on and interactive, the group size will be kept small. There will be plenty of opportunities for participants to interact with one another in the breakout rooms, as well as get input from the facilitator.

The session will be led by a Care for Education approved facilitator who is certified to teach Six Bricks to adults and authorised to issue Six Bricks certification. Participants who complete the full training are eligible for Six Bricks Level 1 & 2 Certification, which allows them to use Six Bricks activities.

Six Bricks activities are suitable for:

  • Anyone that helps others develop physical as well as mental functions

  • Those working with children to develop their executive functions and physical skills, in the capacity of parents, teachers, social workers, or therapists

  • People working with the elderly in senior/care facilities, to improve their motor skills as well as keep their brains sharp

  • Trainers and educators looking to introduce playful learning into the facilitation space

At the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how Six Bricks activities help to develop executive and developmental functions

  • Facilitate Six Bricks activities that support learning through play

  • Develop their own Six Bricks activities to further playful learning
